***** UNIVERSAL HINT SYSTEM READER for the AMIGA *****
* version .91 *
Greetings fellow Amiga-ites! Here is the much touted and highly acclaimed
Amiga Reader for the UHS hint files. Now you can have a quick hint for your
favorite game at your fingertips (oh what sweet temptation!) just by having
this Reader and the UHS hint file for that game.
How to Run UHS:
If you are a true gamer, you won't even read these instructions, you'll
figure out how this program works by yourself.
Otherwise...
Run from the CLI by typing,
1>UHS
or to bypass the filename requestor,
1>UHS <hintfile.uhs>
There is also a handy Icon you can click on to start the program.
When the program runs you will see the front cover of your Electronic
Hint Booklet with the name of your game embossed on the front. While you
admire the artwork the program will be loading the hintfile into itself.
This will take a few seconds, after which a 'bookmark' will appear near
the spine of the Booklet. You click on this bookmark to open up the Booklet
to the first page of the table of contents.
In the contents pages you will see listed the various Topics describing
important and distinct portions of the game. Under each Topic is a list of
related Questions. On the upper left and lower right of the page is a square
'turn-page' gadget that will take you forward or backward through the
pages of the Booklet. With these gadgets you can page through the entire
Booklet, past the contents and into the Hints. However, as a shortcut, you
can click the mouse over a Question or Topic on the contents page and be
instantly transported to the relevent Hint page.
The Hint pages will have the Question at the top of the page and some
filled boxes under which the Hints lie hid. By clicking the pointer inside
the desired box and holding down the button you will reveal the Hint. You
must click inside each box you want to reveal, just holding down the button
will not transfer from one box to another.
While you are past the first page of the contents, clicking on the bookmark
will always take you back to the first page. While on the first page of the
contents, clicking on the bookmark will close the Booklet and reveal the
cover once again.
The program can be ended any time by clicking on the close gadget of the
UHS Reader window. One exception is that while the filename requestor is
asking for a filename, the program can only be ended by clicking the
requestor and making no change before hitting return or by entering a blank
line.
About UHS:
The Universal Hint System is the brainchild of Jason Strautman (Golden
Fleece). It employes lightly decoded hintfile databases that can be read
on any machine that has a Reader. Hintfiles are created by volunteer
gamers with a Maker program that is the complement of the Reader, it takes
Topics, Questions, and Hints and makes a hintfile out of it.
Those Aren't Bugs, They're Features:
Bugs fixed in version .91:
>UHS no longer asks for version 34 of the libraries, it asks for
version 0 and takes what it is given.
>UHS no longer does RemLibrary() on Intuition and Graphics. No problem
was reported about this but enough people frothed at the mouth about it
that it was removed. UHS still does RemLibrary on Diskfont and RemFont()
on the Topaz 11 font it tries to open.
I've tested the program as much as I can with my system. I know, however,
that this first version of the program is probably not bug free. My biggest
worry is that some of the UHS hintfiles may not conform exactly to the
standards set by Jason Strautman.
In order that the program return all the memory that it takes, I did some
stuff to the libraries that I'm not 100% sure about. It has not interfered
with any program *I* have (FaccII, rez, DPaintII, etc. ) but I know there
is a lot of esoteric stuff out there that might be insulted by having the
library removed from the system list. Everything I did, though, was through
standard Intuition commands.
If anything wierd happens, please, please, please send me a note about it.
In The Future:
> All reported bugs will be killed.
> The program will be smaller.
> The conversion from cover to page will be cleaner.
> Voice will not be added.
> The graphics will be a little nicer.
> The Amiga UHS Maker file will be released.
